pilot of a single-engine plane. yesterday afternoon he took off for baker city, oregon heading for montana. we are in san jose this evening. do we have any clue if his plane crashed or landed safely? >> reporter: no clue at all right now. that's what investigators are trying to figure out. the search will resume tomorrow. neighbors and members of this san jose mormon church are worried an concerned waiting for any piece of good news but preparing for worst. >> i'm very sad right now. >> reporter: elizabeth is hoping and praying that her friend dale smith and his family are okay. rescuers are searching for their single-engine plane that has been reported missing near the central idaho town of yellow pine. >> it's all you have is faith and hope that things will turn

out all right. >> reporter: the pilot reported an engine failure near the johnson creek airstrip about 125 miles northeast of boise, idaho. dale smith's friend has flown with him several times. >> he's one of the safest pilots i know. someone i have no fear of flying with at all. i'm a pilot, myself, and i really appreciate someone who takes as much care as dale does. >> reporter: the family had spent thanksgiving in oregon and was flying a son to butte, montana. the five people on board are from the smith family. >> i would be very worried if they haven't heard from him. >> smith's co-workers say it was tough to concentrate throughout the day. >> reporter: just praying for a

saturday night apple security guards noticed an open gate on the property. when they searched the grounds, cartwright was hiding in the bushes. he refused to come until officers arrived and a police dog bit him. also new at )t2f11:00, bull harassed and taunted to the point of fighting back. a transgender high school student stood before the school district to explain how a fight posted on youtube could have been avoided if the school officials stepped up to help her. she spoke again. >> reporter: that transgender student along with current and former students say there is no support for the lgbt community in the school system and that has to change. >> as i was telling her she was disrespectful and rude, she had

gum in her mouth and throws it my face. >> reporter: she told the school board what led up to a fight between her and three girls at hercules high school. this video shows that fight that happened in the school courtyard during lunch. >> i was just sticking up for myself because a lot of students would just because you are different, you'll get picked on, you'll -- name calling, bullied, taunted, harassed. all those. >> reporter: the 16-year-old sophomore said she tried to get help from the vice principal but the administrator didn't know the extent of the bullying and that is part of the problem according to charles ramsey. he says the district's sexual harassment policy was not actually implemented in the schools. >> it's a big problem when we can't point to parents and

people what a superintendent is supposed to do. we have to get our lawyers involved and bring it up to code. >> reporter: ramsey says not having a sexual harassment policy leaves the district open to legal action. the community meeting made it clear the district has to get more programs into the schools to support students. >> you need students from the communities from all ages, even the young ones to get them to talk. the only way it will be effective is if you give them the talks. >> reporter: the school board is expected to meet again on january 29th when a new policy on harassment and bullying is expected to be adopted. kimberly tere, nbc bay area news. back to school for an oakland teenager. today was sasha fleischman's first day back. the agender teen has been out for four weeks after another

teenager set her on fire aboard the bus. the teenager will not be taking the bus alone any more. no rain, it's a messy night for a san jose neighborhood. but water service has been restored after a water main break at camden avenue. it happened this morning. a few hours later a bigger hole opened up. the crews spent the evening repairing it. the age of the water main might have caused a rupture. the balmy weather is being replaced with cold temperatures, freezing temperatures are possible for parts of the bay area this week. jean ellie is live in san francisco. can you feel the cold? >> reporter: i can feel it. we are expected the winds to pick up and make it feel even colder. it's a change we need to prepare for.

the spilled oil polluted dozens of miles of shoreline and killed thousands of sea birds. a strange story tonight. new video of firefighters in southern california rescuing a woman who fell between two buildings. happened just a few hours ago. the firefighters were lowered into that tight space and able to pull up the woman 25 feet to safety. it took about an hour. witnesses say the 28-year-old woman was trying to jump from one building to the other. >> we don't know why. let's turn it over to jeff ranieri. we are expecting some of the coldest temperatures of the year. >> freeze watch in effect throughout wednesday morning. we'll have more on that coming up. let's get to the sky camera network. it is cloudy in the bay with fog and drizzle in san francisco. 54 in the peninsula in the south bay, temperatures in the low 50s there. tomorrow morning at 8:00 we

start off with 50. by 2:00 p.m. only about five degrees of warming. so staying chilly in the forecast for everyone. what you'll see on the microclimate forecast on tuesday is about the same temperature no matter where you go. so dress for the coast like you're going to be dressing if for interior valleys as well with temperatures in the upper 50s to about 60. for the peninsula, 61 and redwood city. let's get a look across the north bay, east bay and the tri-valley. temperatures in the upper 50s. that's similar to oakland and hayward with temperatures at 55 degrees. now let's look at the weather story. what we have happening is this cold front that is pushing across california and that's going to continue to drag down this arctic air as we head throughout tomorrow. so with that said as we mentioned earlier it's going to

be a chilly start tomorrow but not the coldest day of the week. we'll have 39 in santa rosa and san jose down to about 46. the other thing we'll have to contend with is the wind. 15 to about 30 miles an hour at the coast. then as we head throughout the afternoon we could have wind gusts across the peninsula and the north bay as high as 35 miles an hour. so a cool day and also a windy one. and it's about to get even colder. so let's take a look at those chilly details. you can see the coldest air of the week will be arriving on wednesday and thursday. for the north bay and the east bay the temperatures range 25 to 32 degrees. it sounds like common sense. dress in layers. freeze watch goes into effect wednesday morning for the entire bay area, except for san francisco, that's the only spot that's not going to be in that 25 to 32 degree range as we go

york yesterday was going three times the speed it should have been traveling. the train was going 82 miles an hour when it entered a sharp turn with a speed limit of 30 miles an hour. it killed four people and injured more than 70. the train's engineers claims that brakes were working. the official cause could take a year or longer to determine. barry bonds is paying up but isn't giving up on having part of his conviction ocihvoverturn. a jury ruled that he was criminally evasive during his testimony before a grand jury. the sentence includes an already paid $4100, 30 days of house arrest, two years of probation and community service. however bonds is yet to serve that part of the sentence, the house arrest and his attorneys are asking an appellate course
